Instructions for making a
CD containing the entire Spoken English Learned
Quickly course
- Open a new folder on your computer and name it
selq (for spoken english learned
quickly).
- Download all of the ZIP folders shown in the
link table
above.
- Download each ZIP folder by
right-clicking on its link. When the
dialog box asks for direction, select
Save Target As . .
. Save the ZIP folders on your
desktop.
- Open the selq file on your
computer.
- Double click on each ZIP folder. When the
ZIP folder opens, transfer all of the files in
that folder to your selq folder. If
there is a folder (or zipped file) in the
unzipped files, place the folder (or zipped
file) in selq without opening
it. For more information about the use of
ZIP folders, see The purpose of a ZIP
folder link below.
Are you having difficulty
downloading files? Browser
incompatibility is the most common reason
files do not download.
- Try downloading the files from a
different computer.
- Have someone else download the
files from their computer.
|
- Download the index.html file to your
selq folder. Listing this file separately
allows you to keep your CD current with the
website. If a dialogue box asks if you want to
replace the older file with a newer file, answer
"Yes." Right click and again use the Save Target As . . . tool. You
may save the index.html from either the
last entry in the Download
the entire course from a dial-up connection
table itself or from the box below.
- Choose how you want your CD to open.
-
After all of the ZIP files are unzipped and
placed in the selq folder, the beginning
section of your open selq folder should
look like the open folder below. Notice that this
view shows at least one ZIP file which remains
zipped because it was zipped when the ZIP file
containing it was opened. (This is an
incomplete list — there are approximately
1,100 files and folders in the selq
folder.)

-
An important troubleshooting
note regarding folder location.
Each of the following folders must be
removed from its ZIP folder and be
placed in the open selq
folder:
- The folders
address, figures,
flag, image, and
info are all in the
zfolders.zip
folder.
- If additional language
images are required, they will be
added as image2 (in
zimage2.zip), image3 (in
zimage3.zip), etc. (The
folders image2 or
image3 are not shown in the
screen shot above.)
-
An important troubleshooting
note regarding individual files.
Each of the following files must be
removed from the ZIP folder and be
placed in the open selq
folder:
- All studentinfo files
(such as
studentinfofrench.html or
studentinfotagalog.html) and
all Fables (such as
wmjourneyczech.html or
wmdiscoveryamharic.html) must
be removed from the zinfo.zip
folder.
- All individual files (and
folders) in zworking1.zip,
zworking2.zip,
and zworking3.zip
must be placed in selq. This
will include a small number of ZIP
folders such as lse.zip and
lsfl.zip which are placed in
selq as zipped folders because
they are contained within the
zworking.zip folders as zipped
folders.
- All lesson HTML and TXT files are
contained in the single
zlessons.zip folder. However, to
make uniformly small MP3 files for
dial-up downloading, not more than four
files are included in each ZIP folder.
Therefore, for Lesson 1, there are
three MP3 files with American accent
(indicated by the Am portion of
the file name) in zlesson1AmA.zip
and three in zlesson1AmB.zip.
Equally, the same three exercises are
found in each of the two British accent
(Br) folders
zlesson1BrA.zip and
zlesson1BrB.zip.
- A CD will work without one or the
other of the language accents. If
only a CD with British accent
(Br) is required, then none of
the American accent (Am)
recordings need to be downloaded and
added to the selq folder, or
visa versa for an American
accent-only CD.
|
| To operate properly, your open CD
should look like this: |
rather than this: |
 |
 |
- To use your selq CD or folder for
uploading to your iPod™, MP3 player, or
handheld device, open either the MP3 or
TXT links on the Downloadable TXT, PDF and
MP3 Files table.
- This CD can be used for English study on your
computer. The same CD can also be used in an MP3
disc player.
- We also encourage you to sell the CD for your
own profit. See the Earn
money link.
General Troubleshooting:
-
Almost all problems which result in a CD
opening improperly — or audio and PDF files
not opening — are the result of the files
and folders not being placed in the appropriate
folder. (See Help page
7 and Help page
8 for more information.) If individual
folders or files do not open correctly, make
certain that the files are in their correct
folder. Also make certain that all folder and
file names are spelled correctly. Verify all file
HTM or HTML designations since (Save Target As... may eliminate
the "l" (L) from "html". You must add an "l" (L)
to the extension if it was included in the
original file name. In addition, Save Target As... may add a
"[1]" indicating that it is "copy number
1." For example, the file name
ls2eb.mp3 may become ls2eb[1].mp3.
Remove any "[1]"s ([one]) from file names. In the
download procedure to burn a CD described on this
page, the index.html file is the only
file (rather than ZIP folder) which
is downloaded independently. In duplicating a CD,
much of the concern of this paragraph will be
limited to the single index.html file.
However, all of the files are independently
downloaded from the Downloadable TXT, PDF and
MP3 Files table. Special care will be
required to prevent this problem from occurring
in downloading these individual files.
Note: Handheld texting
downloads are used in high volume from the
website. In order to simplify linking for the
users, all files are open rather than grouped
into folders. For example, if the lesson audio
files were placed in a folder called "MP3," a
user of a handheld device would need to text
http://www.freeenglishnow.com/mp3/ls5a.mp3
rather than the shorter
http://www.freeenglishnow.com/ls5a.mp3
in order to access the same file.
-
If you are making a CD which you want to be
able to open automatically, autorun.inf
and launch.exc files must be included to
automatically open the CD. If the
launch.exc file will not download from the
www.FreeEnglishNow.com website, you may
download a free copy from www.nu2.nu. After the ZIP folder has
downloaded, you may open it and use just the
launch.exc file. If you also need to use
the autorun.inf file from the download,
you must open it (double click on the file) and
rewrite it to read "[autorun] open=launch.exe
"[name of file].html"". For example, if you
want to open the index.html file, the
autorun entry must read "[autorun]
open=launch.exe "index.html"."
-
The CD designed for the Spoken English
Learned Quickly course fits on a standard
700MB disc. If your burner gives an alert that
there is too much material, 1) make certain
that the disc is empty, 2) make certain that
you have not copied more material than is
required for the CD, or that you have not tried
to load any of the downloaded ZIP folders to the
CD (you cannot combine the material from an open
ZIP folder and an original ZIP folder itself as
it would duplicate the content), and,
3) make certain that you have not copied
other files (or folders) which are not part of
the Spoken English Learned Quickly
downloaded course.
The purpose of a ZIP folder: A ZIP
folder
compresses the contents so that the folder
downloads more quickly. You cannot play or open
files when they are in a ZIP folder. The only
purpose of ZIP folders is to accelerate
downloading. You must download the ZIP folder
to your computer, open it, remove the files and
place them in a regular folder before you can
use them. If a file does not respond properly,
verify that it is not in a ZIP folder.
